Meet Jim

Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist

Jim is a Play Therapist who’s worked therapeutically with children and young people since 2016. He works with children of all ages through to adolescence, adapting the way he works to their personality and needs.

He understands that children don’t always have the words to explain how they’re feeling. Play, creativity and activity can offer other ways to communicate, helping them explore experiences and emotions that may otherwise be difficult to express.

Experience

Jim holds an MSc in Play Therapy from the University of South Wales and is a registered member of the British Association of Play Therapists (BAPT).

Since qualifying, he’s worked across educational, charity and local authority settings, including extensive one-to-one work in schools with children and teenagers experiencing emotional, behavioural and relationship difficulties.

His work is informed by an understanding of child development, attachment and relationships, as well as how play and creativity can help children make sense of difficult experiences.

While much of Jim’s work involves younger children and play-based therapy, he also helps older children and teenagers. Depending on the young person, sessions might involve talking, creative activities, play or simply finding a way of interacting that feels comfortable and natural to them.

Alongside his play therapy training, he has completed additional training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and has a particular interest in attachment-based approaches.

Jim's approach

Jim believes children should be able to engage with therapy in a way that makes sense to them, rather than being expected to sit down and explain exactly what’s wrong.

His style is calm, patient and responsive. He gives children and young people time to build trust and express themselves in their own way, whether through play, conversation, creativity or shared activity.

By working at their pace, Jim helps young people better understand what they’re experiencing, develop confidence in expressing how they feel and find ways to manage difficult emotions and relationships.
