Celebrating Pride Month

🌈 Celebrating Pride Month at Teenage Mental Health 🌈

Inclusive support for every identity, every day.

June is Pride Month, a time to honour and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community, reflect on the history of the movement, and continue to stand up for equality, visibility, and inclusion.

Pride began as a protest—sparked by the Stonewall Riots in June 1969—and grew into a global movement that has helped drive social and legal change for LGBTQIA+ people. But while Pride is now filled with celebration, colour, and community, it remains a time to remember the ongoing challenges that many still face and to continue the call for justice and respect.

At Teenage Mental Health, we believe every person deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion, and understanding, regardless of their gender, sexuality, or identity. That’s why inclusivity isn’t just something we support during Pride, it’s part of who we are, every single day.

Why Pride Still Matters

While progress has been made, mental health challenges among LGBTQIA+ young people remain high. Discrimination, stigma, and lack of support continue to impact wellbeing in serious ways:

  • 🧠 LGBTQIA+ individuals are 1.5x more likely to experience depression or anxiety.

  • 💔 Nearly half of all transgender individuals report attempting suicide at least once.

  • 🚫 40% of LGBTQIA+ students have experienced bullying at school.

These figures highlight the importance of safe, supportive mental health services that understand the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ young people.

Mental Health Data on Challenges Among LGBTQ+ Individuals in the UK

  • Depression and Anxiety: Over half of LGBTQ+ individuals have experienced depression, and three in five have experienced anxiety. Among LGBTQ+ individuals aged 18 to 24, one in eight have attempted to end their life.

  • Hate Crimes: 69% of LGBTQIA+ individuals who have been victims of hate crimes experienced depression, and 76% reported episodes of anxiety or panic.

  • Accessing Healthcare: Around one in eight LGBTQ+ individuals have experienced unequal treatment from healthcare staff because they are LGBTQ+. One in seven have avoided treatment for fear of discrimination.  mentalhealth.org.uk

  • Suicidal Thoughts and Self-Harm: More than half of LGBTQ+ young people aged 13 to 24 have considered suicide in the past year, with trans and nonbinary youth reporting significantly higher rates. research.birmingham.ac.uk

  • Estrangement from Family: Nearly half (46%) of LGBTQ+ young adults in the UK are estranged from at least one family member due to their sexuality or gender identity. theguardian.com.

These statistics show the importance of inclusive and affirming mental health support for LGBTQ+ individuals. At Teenage Mental Health, we are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to us for support.
